250th Anniversary Battle of Short Hills
June 26th - 27th, 2026
Union County, New Jersey
The 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Short Hills will take place June 26–27, 2027, commemorating one of New Jersey’s most important—and often overlooked—Revolutionary War engagements. Fought on June 26, 1777, on the farmland of what is now Union County, the Battle of Short Hills saw American forces withstand a determined two-pronged British attack, executing a fighting retreat that protected the Continental Army’s withdrawal to the Watchung Mountains. This action proved critical to the survival of New Jersey as American territory and forced the British to reconsider their strategy for reclaiming the colonies. In recognition of this pivotal moment, the 3rd New Jersey Regiment, joined by members of the Brigade of the American Revolution, will recreate the battle through immersive living history, bringing the story of sacrifice, resilience, and survival back to the very ground where it unfolded. Though thousands walk this landscape every day, few realize the intensity and importance of what occurred here 250 years ago. Full event details, registration information, and schedules will be released soon.
The event will be held at Oak Ridge Park, a site that borders—and in some areas encompasses—the original battlefield and includes an original 1730s dwelling. The park offers ample parking and space for period encampments, allowing military and civilian living historians to establish authentic camps and safely conduct tactical battle demonstrations. Throughout the weekend, visitors will be able to engage with a wide range of interpretive programming focused on 18th-century soldiery, civilians, minorities, and material culture, fostering a deeper connection between modern New Jerseyans and their Revolutionary-era past. In addition to honoring the men who defended this ground in the name of liberty, the event aims to spark renewed interest in New Jersey’s colonial history, support local historical organizations, and benefit surrounding communities and small businesses. More information on featured presentations and programming can be found in the attached materials, with additional announcements forthcoming.
