Burning of Kingston
October 18th-20th: Kingston, NY
Join us this October 18th-20th for a fantastic event in the heart of revolutionary America in Kingston, NY!
Having received news of the successful blocking of Burgoyne’s Army’s invasion of New York north of Albany, British General Sir Henry Clinton sailed north up the Hudson River in October 1777 in an effort to relieve pressure on Burgoyne. Clinton’s mix of British and Provincial Forces overran Forts Clinton and Montgomery at Bear Mountain on October 6th, then proceeded further up the river, harassing both banks of the Hudson with artillery fire and occasional landing parties. By October 16th, the small fleet was anchored off of Kingston, NY, which had been the meeting place of the New York State Legislature. British forces landed at the Rondout and moved up to Kingston proper, burning New York’s capital to the ground. After sailing further north to burn the Livingston Family estate at Clermont, the invasion force turned back upon receiving word of Burgoyne’s Surrender.
