Joseph Brant's Volunteers

Brant's Volunteers were American Loyalists and Indians who followed the leadership of "Thayendanegea", known as Joseph Brant. Joseph was a full-blooded Mohawk Indian, who received a commission as Captain in the British Army. His Volunteers were primarily from the New York frontier, although some did come from neighboring colonies and territories.

The Volunteers served throughout the war of rebellion and distinguished themselves in numerous encounters. After the war the followers of Brant were unwelcome in the former colonies, and moved to Canada, where they were given land to settle by the British Government.

They served without pay, and clothed and accoutered themselves, although they were sometimes supplied out of Fort Niagara. Since they wore no official military uniforms, they were identified by "a yellow piece oflace affixed to their headgear."

The primary impression depicted by our re-enactment group is that of displaced civilian loyalists, living on the New York borderlands during the year 1777. Those members who have flintlock firearms form the "war parties" led by Joseph Brant, and the remainder of our membership represent civilians of the period who would have followed this small irregular army for protection.

Our purpose is to provide an accurate portrayal of the Lifestyle ofthe Period. Please feel free to ask any questions. Membership is open to any individual or family interested in joining. Our requirements are safety and authenticity, and our goal is an enjoyable time for all.
