Contacting the Brigade

Before you make an inquiry, please be advised that the Brigade is an association of Revolutionary War living historians. We are not a research service.

  • If you are looking for information on an ancestor who served in a Revolutionary War unit, we don't have it. Muster rolls and probate records in that person's home town might be of help. Also there are pension records in the US National Archives for some Revolutionary War veterans. There is even less information on individual British and German soldiers. For a start the Regimental headquarters in England should be contacted.
  • If you are looking for general information on the life of a Revolutionary War soldier we suggest Private Yankee Doodle by Joseph Plumb Martin.
  • If you are looking for unit information see if it is listed in the Brigade member unit list and has a hyperlink. If the unit is not listed, it is not a Brigade member. In that case the following books may help: Encyclopedia of Continental Army Units by Fred Anderson Berg; and Encyclopedia of British, Provincial, and German Army Units 1775-1783 by Phillip R.N. Katcher. For militia and state units the best source would be state and community archives. This should seem obvious but you will not find any information if the unit didn't serve in the American Revolution, like the Washington State Coastal Artillery or U.S. Air Force.
  • If your request is "Tell me everything you know about the Revolutionary War" (you would be amazed how many people make that request), please see the over 1,000 printed books on subject, and countless unprinted records in archives in the U.S., Canada, and England.
