General Orders, Friday, April 18, 1783

The Commander in Chief orders a Cessation of Hostilities between the United States of America and the King of Greate Britain to be publickly proclaimed to morrow at 12 o’clock at the New building, and that the Proclamation which will be communicated herewith, be read tomorrow evening at the head of every regiment and corps of the army. After which the Chaplains with the several Brigades will render thanks to almighty God for all his mersies, particularly for his over ruling the wrath of man to his own glory, and causing the rage of war to cease amongst nations.

…Every thing is prepairing for a great day of rejoiceing in Camp. A fu-de-joye, an illumination, and a great display of fire works will be the principal actions worthy of notice on that day.”

Lt. Benjamin Gilbert, 5th Massachusetts Regt.

As you can see, we have a full and busy weekend planned for one of the last 225th anniversaries left for us to celebrate. Consider bringing your lunch and visiting the Purple Heart Hall of Honor at noon. Due to the hospitalization of the new exhibit designer, the opening has been pushed back to 4 July, but you can see a preview of what’s to come featuring paintings by Dahl Taylor.

TAKE NOTICE!!
Parking will be across the street at the New Windsor Town site due to the Grand Illumination and Fireworks display taking place in the field where we usually park. Modern campers should contact Site Supervisor Mike Clark at (845) 561-1765.
